Aster had arrived before her time, slipping out of Violet like a wet fish on a squally spring day of spitting rain. And Aunt Muriel had proved true to her word when she’d said, all that time ago at Montagu Square, that she was very good in a crisis. The baby had caught them all unaware. Violet’s father had been called away to a teaching hospital in London only that week, but had assured Violet – and everyone had assumed – he’d be back long before the baby came.

Aster had emerged fragile and raw and as delicate as a kitten, and Violet also was desperately weak. But Muriel, like a reassuring angel, nursed Violet without fuss, knowing exactly what she needed before she did, while her mother could only sit by the bed and worry.

A year ago, the first green specks of hopeful bluebells had emerged under the trees at the bottom of Old Trellick’s garden and on Aster’s seventh day, Violet watched, exhausted, in bed as Jack – home on precious leave – had held his daughter for the first time, her tiny head cradled in his palm. A watery light had come through the window and glowed around them like an aura. Violet had felt, in that moment, that Aster had chosen to live, and that the world could spin again.

‘How light she is,’ Jack had said. ‘As light as a feather. What shall we call her?’
